Brendan@36: Thanks! That's what I needed. Quite a few where I had to rely on hints from this thread--one of them 5d, CoD for me.

I've got 12ac now but, perhaps I'm being dense, is there wordplay there? Or lack-of-word play? First two letters seem to come naturally but can't winkle out the other five.

Your are on the wrong lines for 12a. I see what you mean about the first two letters, but in fact that's irrelevant.

Just realized that 12a might be a 14a for many.

Brendan@38: Thanks, very kind but 7d is gettable for non-UK solvers. It was one of my final 3 ones in (with 6d and 12a). The two final letters are obvious from wordplay (with the final letter also a crosser), and with the other two crossers one only needs to intuit the first and third of six letters.

To be honest, the solution became so clear I didn't even google the cricket book until your (and chrise's) posts. I allow myself a pass on esoteric UK GK. 😁

I thought the definition for 6d was rather loose!

I was of a similar mind Chris so checked Olympian in Chambers thesaurus - you can probably guess what the very first word was:-)

12a works for me if the solution were 4 letters

I agree that (4) would be better, redpete
