Newnhamite here, married to a Queensman. He is mystified by my addiction to crosswords (current favourites are Guardian Genius and the CAM one).

After three long sessions we (my wife and I) have completed!

And, with hindsight, Hamish himself gave the first clue in his first reply. We do that daily as well. Thank you!

Ditto Prospero, and a former post of your suggested that we may be near contemporaries.

This is sounding dangerously like a multi-person meet-up might be on the cards.

Potentially ditto from me too – given that I was around the place for ten years – but all in the last century! Anyway, having completed the grid fairly rapidly, I am struggling a bit with the endgame. My problem circles around some doubts as to which dial certain clues belong. Would someone be able to (privately) confirm the dials? I see some words emerging from the "soup" but not enough to prod me towards the required phrase.

Hi Teg
Hopefully you have enough dial identifications plus letters correct to make educated guesses at some of the words contained in the resultant message. Then try to fit the rest in a meaningful way. That was my modus operandi for the first phase (and there is a lot more to come). I think Dial 4 is probably the easiest to get right.
Hang in there!
