Well, I can't find a single word in my dictionary to correspond with my crossers for 4d : - A - R - P - ??

My issue with 17 is that with the usual two letters for Home Counties, the word is something on a boat but not a fish. With a different first letter I see a knid of fish but no home counties!

Also in 26 what part does Brosnan play in the clue?

Your letters are right. It was one of the words I didn't know. It's a compound anagram

Google 17 - it is the name for more than one species of fish as well.

Thanks chrise, my first search didn't find it but now I see the striped one certainly exists.

My first reaction was Oh No not Brockwell, my least favourite setter. I've read through a few and was cheered by getting 7ac straight away, but I may not persist.

I'd best read the rest of the clues. It is a very miserable day here in south west. The storm was noisy and vicious last night.

6d is definitely thematic. First 6 letters. Brockwell often includes theme references as parts of solutions.

Neville, your crossers are right. It's an American (AFAIK) slang word.

Brockwell has become one of my favourite compilers but not today. Really struggling with this , few in southeast corner plus another three or four. Have spotted the theme , will continue and with hints on forum may have finished by tomorrow unless it defeats me. The weather is miserable here too Roof so I may as well plod on!!
