Hi Mattrom,

I've got a different answer for 2d, one which is an organisional chart showing peoples position in a firm or company, hence "this'll show who's the boss" - it's the only word that fits my letter pattern which makes me wonder if I've got more than this wrong?

the 8 letter word from Mattrom has the IS changed to og (go/pass reversed)RA (artist).....then the defn agrees with yours??

I think you are fine. An 8 letter word for "being" with IS replaced by 4 letters: 2-letter "pass" reversed plus the usual 2-letter artist.

Any hints on 3d and 13a would be gratefully received. Still stumped by theme...

3d - 3 letter "sleep" + 3 letter "a" + usual small - definition is "heads"

13a - anagram - definition is a slang term meaning "opening"

Finished, thanks to Brendan. Armed with all the information my research leads me to the same 10 word answer as Ilippu and Jadzia, which I assume is wrong. Hmmm....

OK, I've sorted almost everything out.

@Ilippu, it definitely is 9 words that you're looking for, but one of them is a contraction.

The only thing to resolve is the 5th of the words in the down clues that "hint at who was responsible". And one of the 4 that I have identified is a bit tenuous.

I have a full grid but have yet to get the endgame.

It's probably coincidence but if one Googles the biggest 14d 16d from Jan. 2006 (so 20 years ago this month), it's name is 9 words, albeit some of them are contractions.
