It yields 10 words. Not 9, unless there are two versions.

So, I have a completed grid and 9+1 words for submission.

Still clueless re the extra words, Jan 2006 event.

Got 20a correct, 2d remains the only one unparsed.

Am having problems with left hand side. Anyone give me a hint to 17d River craft taking hours once you go through this(7) Thanks.

Apologies if my 10-word solution is incorrect as I have not more completely identified the theme with the extra words in clues.

It seems unlikely the setter and editor would make a mistake like that :-(

I think 2d. is a word for "being", with 2 letters replaced by 4.
A different 9-word solution can be derived from the extracted words. I can't see how it caused a stampede, however.

The unclued entries are the key. The stampede was figurative.
