Don't have 16a.

20a if right, unparsed.

14d 16d had to be that. How to get 9 words out of that, is not clear.

See what the completed grid had to offer...actually, saw it a while ago, that made solving faster, giving me several answers in bottom and left.

Haven't fully parsed 2d and 22d, both answers correct. So, I have 28 words ...together they don't lead me to anything in Jan 2006. 1989 maybe.

Have more work to do.

Hi ilippu,

22d - 4 letter "possibly Diana" (one needs to be British and of a certain age to get this) around/'to cross' "island" - definition is "Day for one".

29a - The answer is clear but every word seems to have a function?

16a - 3 letter "given leave" reversed/'returns' goes around/'bored by' "advanced" - definition is "dabbler" although it's not in Chambers, rather something the dabbler does is.... or I've got it wrong!

22d, thanks.
29a, 2 letter word is not necessary. ? at end is enough.

16a is:

??al for sure.

Maybe my guess for 14d 16d is wrong.

Thanks ilippu.

Your letters are correct. I read it as a 3 letter reversal of "given leave" as in 'given permission' but you've got much further than me so I could be wrong. That said, Google confirms my answer is indeed a "dabbler".
