Has anyone got to grips with the preamble today? I understand the phrase implying clues are listed shortest first but the n ext bit “alphabetical order of solution within each group” baffles me. Will it become clearer when I have a few more solutions?

I took it to mean that if, for instance, they're are a group of seven answers of length 5 lette, then this group of seven will be arranged in alphabetical order of their answers.

That is correct brendan, I can't figure out clues 2,28,37 or 38, although I know what the answers must be,

23a is tricky. Anagram of mathematician minus tim(e) twice, definition just Greek. The first word of 40d would more commonly be “caught”
