Hi Adea,

29a - Chambers gives "in" as a definition of "by".

2d - 3 letter "worried" (1st, 2nd and final letter) goes around 3 letter "prisoner" which itself goes around single letter "river"

Similar story here. Very rapid initial burst and then a brick wall. I don’t remember getting so many clues to fit that I couldn’t parse. Having finished I am still curious about a number of clues. Reading the parsing of 30 I realise that some of the clues are simply beyond my capacity to unpick. Nevertheless, a lot of fun.

Adea/Brendan – I am also struggling to see how 'by'='in'. I guess you could say 'Owls fly by night' is similar to 'Owls fly in the night' but I can't think of any sentences where they are directly interchangeable?

How about "pay in cash/installments" and "pay by cash/installments"? Or a whole raft of expressions having the form "In doing X/By doing X", such as "In failing to make the dog regurgitate your homework you have earned a big zero"?.(Acknowledgements to the LanGeek website)

Can anyone help with 15 across. We have obvious answer as in first appearance on stage etc but not really seeing Spoonerism. Unless Arab? Overall not a fan of crosswords with such convoluted parsing. Think you should feel a little thrill of solving a clever clue, not well that was painful....

Hi Snowwhite,

I think the first bit of the Spoonerism is meant to be pronounced as if it rhymes with 'hay'.

Hello all. I'm confused by 22d. It seems to me that 'for one' and 'artiste essentially' are both generating the same letter. So why have we got this same letter generated twice? I imagine I'm missing something obvious as usual.
