I have never once come across that definition of "bromide". In fact, it was only after I posted my query that I decided I shouid probably check Chambers, just to make sure I wasn't missing something:-)

Similar experience to Rog, this was easy up until the point that it wasn’t. Bromide raised a suspicion which caused me to look it up. The cartoon figure I only know because he’s been used before (by Soup, I think).

There’s a letter in 6d I can’t quite resolve. I have a 3 letter word for crafty around 1,3,1 where the final 1 is the letter I don’t see.

Ah, realised my mistake as soon as I posted, I had that letter wrong. All sorted now.

Parsing of a few was tricky but rewarding. But I’m stuck on 15a. The answer seems obvious and I get that it accounts for ‘expected’ but I can’t see or hear a horse.

Oh I’ve got it. Regular type of crossword horse.

I generally dislike "Spooner" clues, but I thought 15 was brilliant.

Held up by enetering the "bromide" at 29a.

Why might the sounds like in 10a be flat?

Now you mention it, I did have a vague memory of the cartoon character having appeared before, which may be why I was able to check it fairly quickly. I suppose that counts as progress - next time it appears (!) no doubt I’ll write it in without a second thought.
