Another thought. If we choose, let's say, the version of 17a which begins with an earlier letter, does that mean we have to enter a version of 7d and 20d which do not conform to the alternative 17a (if that's possible - I can see a possibility for 20d but not 7d. Or is that irrelevant?

I don’t think so, aspria. The pairs at 7 and 20 are set and given by the wordplay. The four ambiguous answers are determined by your choice at 17a

17a is one of the 5 ambiguous entries, and the other 4 also relate to which option you choose for 17a.

I've never seen the themed subject but am obviously aware of it as it seems incredibly popular.

That was very clever. Thank you, Glyph. I have tried the thematic subject given its popularity and the enthusiasm of critics whose views I generally respect. But I’m afraid that it was worse than toothache. My daughter, on the other hand, enjoys it greatly and thinks I am very odd - which is probably true.

The online version still makes no reference to the additional letters in the down clues, which seem critical to uncovering the theme. Jono, you seem to have the ear of the Editor - could you enquire?

Got a great start with this and was feeling very happy with myself but can't for the life of me get 6d or 12ac. Any (extra) clues welcome 😁
