I'm of a kind with Brendan and Geeker on this. Some very clever and well clued solutions that take some fathoming mixed with a more straightforward offering. Probably too many anagrams for my taste on a Saturday but who cares really. A very enjoyable start to Saturday thanks Imogen.

As a bit of additional info. Even with the explanation on here I don't get 3d. Never heard of the US singer though geeker probably has. LOI was 15a which I got from crossers but can't be bothered to try and parse it just yet.

COD I liked 28a because I love the use of axes in that. I'm also a fan of 26a. My FOI was 1a but had to have help with the parsing thanks again Jono.

Have a good Saturday all.

I'm finding this far from easy. After an hour I still have very little on the RHS (though 17 was FOI), and am not seeing anything for 1d.
Held up a bit by having the wrong ending for 9a; 4d eventually corrected it.
I like 26a!

Typical! As soon as I posted I saw 1d.

In 15a the third and fourth words of the clue correspond to a 4-letter not-often-used past tense of a verb.

Ok, finished. I don't understand my LOI, 23d, though - if the congregation is the last 4 letters (is it?), how does "understood" give the first letter?

Chris you need to interpret understood as ‘standing under’ I think

Thanks jono. I thought it might be that, but it's not very good, is it?

Chamber shows understand meaning “stand under” only as Shakespearean usage, so without indication I think it’s a stretch!

With regard to 26a, it's worth seeking out the Bruegel (though apparently not!) painting. It's probably the painting in which the "subject" is the least obvious of any!
I can't give a link here, as it would include the solution.

jono - WS uses "understood" often to refer to the groundlings - who under-stood the stage ...
