Regarding Brockwell's themesters, I still stand in awe of Prize 29,799's paired SEA N[Bean]ettle and SHAR-PEi 🤘

I was so proud of solving the football team clue that I felt compelled to Google their nick/mascot (which of course I NHO)...

I can imagine how opaque these UK references must be to overseas solvers, so it's amazing that you still manage to solve them.

I was very young when Dick Emery was on TV but, in addition to his catchphrase, I remember for the intro to his show he would stand to the side of a glass shopfront and then move one arm and one leg out and, because of the glass, it would give the illusion that both arms and legs were going up and down at the same time.

I know it loses a lot in translation, but to a 3 year old Bren it was pretty funny 😂

Emery on vacation, and pirate in clue, remembered Long John Silver's eye-patch and guessed the second word. It had to be. That left Dick ;-).

Only just started this as woke up early thanks to the cat. @Brendan yes much appreciated though haven't solved that clue yet. But, re 23, was that not Harry Worth? Maybe Dick Emery too but I always remember HW for that little routine.

Hi Rocky, I've just checked on Google and you are absolutely right, it was Harry Worth.

In my defence, I was just a wee young chap at the time:-)

I thought it was. I only really remember because I couldn't tell you a thing about Harry Worth, or even if he was at all funny, I just remember him for that one thing.

Triple unches! I’m pretty sure Hugh banned this grid. Alan C. is obviously more relaxed…

…that wasn’t meant to be a negative comment, merely an observation.
Very nice puzzle, thanks Dan!

Always happy when I see Brockwell is the setter. I would say this is a tad easier than his norm though none the worse for it. I would think 9d would take some solving if you hadn't read a certain literary work. Though very solvable from the clue.

FOI 24d. LOI 17a. COD 11a (well I had to didn't I).

Thanks Brockwell. I wonder where you are? In the spirit of this forum:
