The theme...
Help with the theme may also be sought here. The help given should be fairly gentle in nature - just a nudge, a pointer in the right direction, and certainly not anything that would spoil the puzzle for others. Any posts which, even inadvertently, reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.
If you feel a post IS overly revealing, please let Norah, site administrator know - Norah.evoluted@aol.com. She likes to err on the side of caution, so anything at all 'iffy' will be removed!

Either I'm in a bad way or this is damn tricky. One hour in I have four answers, two of which I don't fully understand.....

It’s quite arcane cluing, in places. The endgame also requires thought. Once you twig what Hawk is getting at, it makes sense, but I dare say there’ll be plenty of GWIT .

Hi quisling, I didn't think the endgame to be too much GWIT given the empty central cell and the number of changes. I agree re some of the clueing but thought the puzzle better for it; I really like 5a.

That’s fair comment, ginge. After a night’s sleep I’m more favourably disposed. I prefer chewy clues, as long as they are fair, and if you understand the endgame it’s unambiguous.

I have a full grid other than the 2 unchecked letters in 43 across. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Ignore my post @8, got those now. Just need the end game now, but struggling with the two extra clues.

It is certainly a GWIT for me, especially as I cannot solve the first additional clue,
