Hi gitto, treat the first word of the first additional clue as a DBE with a subtraction.

Hi Ginge, you have confused me even more, unless DBE refers to a name?

Gitto - I think it means 'definition by example'! The first word is not the definition of the answer to the extra clue; but is part of the word-play.

Full grid - full stop. Can anyone shed light on the words "clothing removed .." in the preamble. I've tried removing all sorts of things from the presumed extra items without them making any sense.

aspria - "clothing" means the outer - ie first and last - letters of the extra words.

But I’m then finding that successive “innards” don’t join together sensibly?
My other big puzzle is what’s going on with 24ac and 5d, where we have 13 cells, or 12 without the central cell, to accommodate 6 letter words?

It’s the clothing that makes the message not the innards

The central cell is empty and there are two six letter entries in 24 and 26a and likewise with downs

Yes, Gitto, you would find it tough without the first additional clue!

The last two words form the definition.

Interesting puzzle.

Tricky clues in the grid fill, followed by a bit of a challenge with the additional clues. Then I thought that I knew what I was doing in the endgame, but I got badly stuck. Lots of muttering about a GWIT, until I realised that I was being an idiot. The answer is neat and clever, and very obvious to most, I'm sure!

Thanks, Hawk.
