In the other clue, two words are an instruction.

I enjoyed the clueing a lot and liked the very choice selection of words, particularly in the SE corner with 31d and 37a. The endgame was mercifully clear once I'd solved the two extra clues - although the first one was pretty tough without checking I thought.

Now I see where I went wrong. I replaced 'Thoth' right next to the candle flame by 'T-moth' (aka Morning Glory Plume moth). That affected 24a and 26a, and all my difficulties followed from there.
