Thanks Hawk. A really good puzzle with some very difficult clues. One of the extra clues took me ages to solve, but once I got that things became clear, or so I thought. A night's sleep got me over the line for the last pair of letters.

I found Bradford's very helpful here. One loose end to tie up - I can't see how the definition in 26a. fits with the likely entry. I have 'mine' reversed, in 'Scots hold'.

You can map one to the other in Chambers via “haggard”.

Whether that means they mean the same I’m not really sure but it works in crossword-land

Thanks Candledave - I hadn't noticed the numbers after and below the central square.

Most grid now filled, apart from a desert in the central bottom half - any tips please for 35ac or 35 d?

but I'm mystified by how to form the two new clues. The pair of letters I'm getting as "clothing" don't seem to make any coherent phrase, whichever order each pair is written in. I presume we keep them in the order of their original clues? eg from 8d to 18d, I can't see any meaningful sequence from the ten letters. What am I missing?

Thanks

ref the 1st additional clue - I have a 4 letter word for the last 2 words in the clue (verified by the BRB) around a single letter. Is that right? because if I google my two 5 letter answers (in either order) nothing shows up.

If I've understood you correctly.... The wordplay of the first additional clue is six letters minus one letter, not four plus one. At a guess, I think you may have arrived at the singular of the six letter word

Dylan - read the clothing separately - the first letters for one clue and last letters for the other

Gitto - the definition is plural taking a letter out of a plural for the first word of the clue

If still in doubt try and think of an idiom including the word from the second clue

Close, Gitto. The two-word definition shares a property with sheep and the single letter is removed in the wordplay.

In any case, if you have the second answer, where you are with the first should give you a PDM.

Thanks RHSL - still don't get that 1st additional clue but I have the PDM and working on the 7 thematic items, 3 down 4 to go.
