It's fun to construct a possible version of the original grid. Nice bonus to an already enjoyable and different puzzle.

And, given that we get a quarterly numerical puzzle, "crossword" should always be interpreted loosely. Not that the finished grid for either subject of recent complaints would not comply!

I think that I will have to give up on this one. Although I have solved 27 of the 36 clues I cannot find a plausible entry for the end of the 7th row, which I think is 6 letters long - but I may be wrong!!!

Forget my last post, sorted out that row. I seem to have some obscure words in my partially filled grid though.

Just to clear up a point raised by two commenters: Yes, the initial grid contains too many 4-letter words. But after adding the required bars, there are only six left.
