Am I right in thinking the first of the three abbreviations in the instructions is short for one of two possible words, one of which implies extending the grid and the other of which, er, doesn't? Is the other abbreviation the correct one?

Thanks to wolfgang I think I have limped over the line with the final, four letter entry. The last bit was almost beyond the wit of this bear of little brain. Enjoyed the rest of the puzzle, the last bit - not so much. Ta ta for now - see you next week.

I have it now thanks to Wolfgang's hint. Decent puzzle ruined by a very GWIT endgame for me.

Loose end is the wordplay for 32a.

Ta

4-letter word for "point" with it's letter S moved to the east.

I try to do the Listener using my own resources - or admit defeat, that I sense is occurring more often - but I found the wording of this one so opaque that I feel able to ask for help. Two problems:
1. Near the end of the preamble there is mention of an "extra" clue. As far as I can see, all the clues relate to entries, there's no superfluous one. Does it mean the clue from the normal six that is not in the group of five cited elsewhere? How is that "extra"?
2. To carry out the final instruction, I can see the obvious character to be used. But the result is meaningless, unless it's the name of someone I don't know. This sort of thing is very bad for one's latent paranoia!

1) the preamble states that the 'extra clue' is formed from the answers to 5 of the 6 normal clues
2) The answer to the 'extra clue' then goes in as the last step in the end game

Finding this endgame a real struggle. I know what I must add, but not where, what I must draw and where it starts but not which direction it starts off in, and I know the answer to the extra clue and how to write it, but I’m not sure which of the several possible places it goes in (because I can’t do the drawing).

candlestick,

If you know the answer to the normal clue which isn't in the "extra" clue, then you may already know how this relates to the second instruction.
If you've got that then think about this: what is the crossword grid itself (literally)?
