How to implement the first instruction is helped by the second sentence of the preamble and the second instruction.
I was glad that I always do my gridfills in a spreadsheet first.

If you've managed all other parts, take a look very carefully at the third sentence of the preamble and the third instruction.

Finally got over the line. One of those that required collaboration with my brother.
I'm not sure what I think of the puzzle, given the unfairness of some clues and the incomplete instructions.
However, the whole thing is a very clever construction. Extra plaudits to the author of the title!

All clues solved apart from 5 across for which I have an answer but, assuming its correct, I cannot fathom the wordplay. A nudge much appreciated.

‘Four’ is 4D; word for awesome minus an A.

Definition is first word.

… which is hardly the commonest use of the word, but is perfectly valid in Chambers noun definition 4.

After last week's elegant puzzle, it's back to the dictionary work. Having picked apart the clues, filled the grid and got the message, I've lost interest in the convoluted endgame. For once, I shall give the rest of this puzzle a miss.

In the preamble "as four letters" is confusing me, why as?

It’s intrinsically linked to the third instruction.

The answer is entered as 4 letters: One is given by the completed grid, one is given by the instructions, 2 are given by the wordplay (3 words) of the extra clue. If you've got the third instruction, you might be able to get see what is interesting about the preamble wording.
