Thanks Kirsanov - I see that now.

S. Harry, I too remain perplexed by that final clue. I know the size of the six squares and the answer which provides that. The six arcs are somewhat more difficult as the orientation of my squares is puzzling me.

I'm not at all sure that I've got the squares etc in the right place and like others, it seems, haven't got a scooby about the last clue.

Finally cracked the 'extra clue', which confirms where the squares etc go. Tough puzzle!

Just cracked the extra clue! Had to read the preamble again very carefully to get it.

I have the squares and the arcs, and the cryptic sentence (although I don't yet know how to perform the last bit) ... but although I have the "clue" I can't make head or tail of it. Is the answer to the clue 4 letters (as the Preamble seems to imply), or perhaps rather more?

You're correct with the preamble; it's very literal: The answer is entered as 4 letters but the wordplay only leads to 2 letters. The remaining 2 letters should already be in place before you address the "extra" clue.

Please could I have a nudge for 26ac, and explanation for my answer to 37ac.

I can't imagine how to implement the first three words of the instructions

26a refers to a singer, wordplay is 1+5, defn last two words in clue

37a refers to another answer in the grid

I am now officially tired of staring at this. I cannot fathom out what the extra clue means, everything else seems achievable though.
