Well, this was pretty challenging, but a satisying PDM when it all dropped into place

6 clues to go.

See the 5 characters in 6 lines.

Initiator of the troubles, I think I know who that is. If so, 5 cells should not be a problem.

KGB seems a collaboration of which I can guess one, though I can't be sure.

For proper completion, correctly guessing the redacted words / letters is essential. I have only guessed a few.

Will look at the rest tomorrow.

I've just made a start and noticed there is no clue for 23d. Will this omission become clear as the puzzle is solved or is it a Guardian cock-up?
