I think you need to revisit the first five letters, with 19 in mind.

Hi Rog, "before"!!!! How did I miss that 🤬

What was I saying about 99% of the time and a more erudite solver coming to the rescue? šŸ˜€

Funny about 15...I recognized the definition part of the clue and wrote in a guess straight off. Only after filling the whole grid did I see a clear thematic (5,3) parsing. Honestly, I skipped over the 1957 bit because the rest fit so well. I just now googled and learned something. 🤣

But, geeker, will you, as I will, have forgotten it within 24 hours? šŸ˜‰šŸ˜„

Bren - I’m certainly not more erudite (or as a receptionist we had used to say, araldite) than you, but I’m glad to have been able to help on this occasion and look forward to you returning the favour soon šŸ˜‰

16 was another one for which I guessed the answer almost immediately but didn't parse until the grid was full.

Oops!
Yes went astray with 15d. I am mortified, it was my academic subject!!

rog, I'll probably remember the 1957 factoid. Partly out of embarrassment but also because I was born in that year.

geeker - you have only 7 years on me!
My only real guess first parse later experience was with 9, which I entered before my LOI 17, but which I only parsed fully a few minutes later. I could see the last 5 letters but it took me a relative age to account for the first.

Another one with 17 as LOI.

What a puzzle! Only Brendan can work a theme like this which I figured out half-way through, somewhat helpful but not always.

Liked several clues. But COD is 22a.

It must be difficult to design a corset for granny :-)
