Mullingar, I think that the adjustments were entirely thematic, in both interpretations of that word.

Consider the relationship that each wordplay outcome bears to the actual entry. And how each part is rearranged to form the final rectangle.

Mullingar, I'm probably way behind others, but it just crossed my mind that the rearrangement in the 'Scotsman' clue applies to all the other thematic material. As the instructions state: 'similarly'.

I am beginning to feel like throwing in the towel on this one. Despite having solved quite a few of the clues for entries which go at the top and bottom of the grid, I cannot make it work. I believe I have sorted out how to enter 1 down and 2 across, but my other answers simply will not fit. I am not really expecting any of you to tell me how to complete the grid, because this would be too specific for this site, but a subtle hint might help.

I found the lower half easier to fill in, particularly the bottom right quarter. The top left corner seems to have been the hardest for some people. I had 1 down in the wrong place for a while.
Have you considered how many across clues there are and how many rows?

Enjoyed piecing this together. Thankfully the theme was a little familiar.

As a matter of personal pride I am trying to figure out a final couple of wordplays. I found some of Phi's directions quite creative. Would I presume that "ship's" in the Greek island clue becomes "her" - as in referring to the gender of a ship as "she"? Seemed a bit of a leap. Or is there a simpler parsing.

And have a 3,5 phrase for the NIT clue, and appreciate it is a thematic clue, but can't figure out the wordplay.

TIA

I have finished the grid but I'm struggling with the title of the book. I can only get 9, maybe 10 letters. The last 4/5 make a word but the first five don't. I have checked and doubled checked but the clues not 'rearranged' all seem to parse correctly with no wordplay rearrangement. I must be going wrong somewhere. Should I have heard of the book?

It's a well known book in literary circles, although very few people have read it. The last 5 letters won't make a word, but the last 4 do. For the first word, you're not looking for a word you would find in a dictionary.

Oh B?gger, I thought about this title a couple of times -year ago I even started to read it but like many (I expect) I haven't quite finished yet :)

I'll read it again now and see if any 'implied quotation' springs to mind. Alternatively, since I've still got to rearrange the grid and find the no doubt mangled quotation, I'll pour another glass and go to bed.
