Agreed - I went the wrong way with that one to start with

Struggling with this!! Is it OK to ask if the blank cells are in normal "end of word" positions or if they can occur part way through a entry? I'm probably overhanging everything at this point...

Actually, my very argument against SISTS is an argument against the wrong answer to that down clue. Hoisted by my own petard!

buzzb you are right about sists of course. Unfortunately I was so impressed with my own cleverness that failed to review the answer until it became clear that it must be wrong.
I knew that the Scottish and N American references were missing but told myself it was sloppy clueing. Another learning point for me.

Incidentally I think that clues with two possible correct answers that need to be resolved by the crossing entries are OK. Red herrings are an important part of the crossword experience.

I realise that it isn't actually necessary to solve the 11th of the down clues ("What contributes ..."), just to take it's initial letter as the 10th of the title but I've gazed & gazed and I just can't spot those pesky 3 letters. Can anyone nudge me out of my misery / bemusement?

And is entered in column 14, not at the top, which is where I first put it.
