Re; 22 cells - always worth looking at the grid dimensions to see if that gives any clues as to how the end product will probably look.

Since matter is being neither created nor destroyed, I believe we should end up with 22 blank cells, correct? Which, by my estimation, can have one of three possible configurations. I assume any is correct (though one may be most aesthetically pleasing), as long as the conditions are satisfied?

Lovely puzzle. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "end up with". The preamble states we're creating a "rectangle with no blank cells".

I think what riversk means is that the resulting rectangle can be positioned in 3 different places in the original grid.

Yes, that’s what I meant. I can’t imagine it matters unless otherwise specified.

Finally I have a full grid with 22 blank cells. I was severely hampered by having an answer different to that intended (i.e. both fit the clue) and in the wrong position.

I’m still struggling with the Greek island and the penultimate across clue. Tips welcome!
I have the book title, but not sure where the implied quotation is coming from?

Dylan, have you filled the grid with the answers that you have? Doing so will quickly lead to the two clue answers that you need.

I too cannot find the quotation, and reading those that I have found is giving me a headache!!

Gitto, with apologies for being a bit elliptic, remember that the crossword's title is always relevant.

A beautiful and brilliant puzzle which I found hard going. I haven't read the book. Thank you Phi.
