Ozzy, I've interpreted "demigod?" as meaning half the name of a half-god". Perhaps there's something better.

Isn't the wordplay in 3d just the first three letters of a four letter word that can mean demigod and the first letter of the entry is missing?

Yes, so it is, thanks. That word for 'demigod' somehow escaped me.

Some tricky clues and I found a couple of the four excess words quite hard to spot. I still don't see the need for the first two words in 13 across. I'm also not convinced I have made the required changes correctly. Applying the source to the grid doesn't seem to be clear cut. Otherwise, an enjoyable puzzle.

13A - possibly a clunky explanation, but the answer isn't the only example of the English name; there's a distinct Southern Island species as well.

I would agree that the clue would work [better?] without the first two words, but I assume that's because I'm missing an elegance somewhere.

The answer to 13A is indeed something in vegetable sheep.

'Type of', possibly; but it's not necessary, particularly in a puzzle where we were asked to identify words to be removed to solve the clue.

According to what's in in Chambers, "vegetable sheep" by itself would not be an accurate definition.

There is, to my mind, some ambiguity about the shortest of the words to be removed. But the other three are quite clear, which is sufficient.

But definitions do not need to have to have only one possible answer, that's why there is the word-play component. By the same argument, isn't the definition in 1 down insufficiently accurate.

An answer may be a synonym for the definition, or an example of it.
