Have you read the full plot synopsis of the work?

I have now realised that my earlier solution was wrong. With what I now have, properly followwng the plot, the rubric is more precise and the final grid words and names are less "clunky", to use jbird54's description.

rhsl - many thanks. I think I have made exactly the same error in completing the endgame. The final grid words/names are indeed now less 'clunky'! Apologies to Bungo, and thanks for a good puzzle.

Sorted everything out and (hopefully) successfully completed this. I do however need to improve my knowledge of a particular genre, as it has recently caused me a great deal of pain!

I’ve read the plot synopsis but it provided no inspiration.

As always I’m impressed at people’s ability to solve the endgames of these puzzles.

Anyway I am drawing a line under 4872 and I look forward (more in hope than expectation) to solving 4873!

Hi dim, just as a matter of interest, do you have the clashing cells?

This may be asking too much in which case ignore: I believe I have fully solved everything but can't find which clue the 2nd (or 8th) letter of the jumbled word is in. I've deduced what the word is so I know which letter I'm looking for and it hasn't prevented me finishing the endgame.

I should have clarified that I know one occurrence of the letter is from an answer in which that letter occurs 3 times.

Espebe, the other clue is very close to the one you have just mentioned.

To give the complete picture:

1. I have 3 clashing cells. I haven't solved 19D which I assume would give me the 2 remaining clashing cells (if not, I have gone badly astray!).
2. I have identified 17 of the 20 unclued letters; I have 2 or 3 clues that I have not been able to parse.
3. Not only do I not have all the letters of the jumbled word, but I can't make much sense of the initial unclued letters I do have.

In light of all this, and that I suspect the endgame involves a GWIT element too big for me to penetrate, I think I am sensible to call it a day on this one. Since this is a normal occurrence for me that's absolutely fine. I will be waiting to see the solution with interest!
