Just picked this up. Haven't started yet but the new version of the Guardian app doesn't give the setter. If you guys hadn't said it was a Brendan I wouldn't have known. I must delve deeper.

OK. Somehow now you can bypass the main menu. Got it. On we go.

I'm stuck on 3d - I suspect it's something I've never heard of.
Also I haven't parsed 5a.
Doesn't 18 need a definition-by-example indicator?

Hi Chris,

3d - "one kind of meat" is, 1,3 repeated and reversed/"served up" - definition is "fish" (i'd never heard of it)

5a - is a double definition biblical reference

18a - I thought the same in regards the Waterllo reference.

Chris, I had heard of 3d. They’re from 20d according to Chambers.

5a the whole clue is a cryptic definition.

18 I thought the same but in fact Waterloo can be used in a general sense.

Ah, those sort of mates.
Apparently most were in sevens, not twos.

5a - Sorry, the whole clue is the definition so ignore my double definition remark in the previous post.

Ha! Chambers actually gives "Waterlloo" as "a final defeat", so it looks okay.

Thanks brendan and jono
"Defeat" isn't as complete as the word needed, though.
