Have just come back to 24a and it's obvious. Grr!
That just leaves 37a.

Hi Mack
If you add the case of VINTAGE on to the front of most of the entry it will give you a less common term for nuns. You might be able to figure out the provenance of the other letter.
If you have any hints for 1ac I'd be delighted!

Wow! That's clever. Thank you, Cruncher.
1a Definition is the last word, but it's tenuous. The word play is easier: a synonym for nick (slang) backwards without university.

Like you, dim, I found the NW corner the most tricky but I worked out some of the answers by figuring out which letters were available to be used after filling the rest of the grid.

I stared at the unclued entries for a while. And then suddenly they were obvious.

Well I am well and truly stuck. To my surprise I managed to find the six letters and found the word and familiar derivative. However I am struggling with the NW corner and cannot solve 1 and 10 across or 1, 3 and 4 down. The two unclued words are a mystery.

This puzzle has had rave reviews on its construction so I am reluctant to give up yet. Hints welcome as ever.

Thanks

1a See post 33
10a Definition is the first two words. Wordplay is made up of: 'out of' synonym, director inside anagram
1d See post 6. Definition is the first two words
3d A bit of a stretch, this one. Definition is the first one or two words - neither is convincing. 'To be supported' is four letters with America inside.
4d The easiest of the lot. Think of a famous Ayrshire golf course and remove one letter. Definition is the first two words.

I've finished the whole thing, and agree with others that it's absolutely brilliantly conceived and worked out.
Managed to fill the two unclued entries after a lot of head-scratching...

BUT I am still puzzled by 23: I'm pretty sure what the answer is, but I just can't parse it... any hints?

Otempora, the clue is a double definition, each of two words. Look up the homophone of your answer in Chambers and you should see it listed as an alternative spelling
