can't think of anything to add on previous hints for 14

Any help with the parsing of 9a ?

After puzzling for some time over 14d I still cannot see what the "parts of" contributes to the answer apart from total confusion, or am I on a completely wrong track?

9 parses as 3,3. Synonyms for nonsense and a gullible person, both reversed ("rejected")

LOI is 14 but I don't understand the beans part

It was the "rejected" that led me in the wrong direction.

Coffindodger ... Sounds like you may be on the wrong track re 14d. You are indeed looking for parts of (a rather obscure definition of) a 'bean'.
9a parses as 3,3 read backwards.

Thanks Jono. I hadn't come across that interpretation of "bean" before, but by the process if reverse engineering I got there in the end!
