Busy weekend (wife’s 50th) so only just got round to finishing. Having read all the comments I must say I think 16D was brilliant for how much it foxed so many bright people when it’s quite simple once you’ve seen it! (I count myself among those foxed, questionably among the bright people).

Enjoyed this. 2 loose ends for me - can't see the wordplay for 1d and 17a. Hints appreciated.

Thanks

1d is a 9-letter word meaning jumping with "a" and a 4-letter right-wing party member removed. 17 is a reversal.

Thanks mpfs, all clear now. 1d slightly dodgy I think, the longer word meaning of or for jumping rather than jumping (not that that's why I couldn't see it).

Is it worth saying that the two abbreviations are of a similar type

I believe I've a full grid but there are still bits of wordplay I don't quite fully understand! 10dn for instance is really stumping me--it almost appears to be a double definition but doesn't seem to be a clean match. Any hints?

3 clues stopping me completing.

Would greatly appreciate hints to all. 42A, 35D, 40D.

If I could get either of 42A or 40D I would probably get the other.

Any help greatly appreciated.
