Hi Johnson,

I think that might be a common experience among solvers where, at first glance it looks very daunting but then, after a while, things slot nicely in to place.

Just started and first few in. Quite enjoying it. But can I ask (and outwith a kind of yes or no as appropriate I'm not seeking any other clue) is 3d a pretty straight, non-cryptic clue? Because it just looks too obvious , but fits with one of the answers for 11/23.

Hi AOBN,

Yes, I think you've got the right "instruments" - it's a sort of &lit clue because the wordplay also forms part of the definition.

I think 3 is slightly cryptic (single letter inserted in a 5-letter word), but I agree it's not a very inspired clue, no offense to the setter.

Oops...Brendan's correct about 3 being an &lit, I'll have to rate the clue more highly!

I think what Brendan is alluding to is that The Beatles went through a phase where they spent some time in India to study meditation and so, presumably, would have also played these "instruments".

Thanks all. The Stones and many others also embraced this instrument in those hippy days of course.
Ironically I'm listening to Brinsley Schwartz's "What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?" as I write this.

Brendan the setter is "baby boomer" age, has leftish political leanings, his wife is Indian, and they've long resided in the Portland, Oregon area. Perhaps he has hippie/countercultural sentiments and is reminiscing about the "Summer of Love"! 😂
