3d there's an Oak EGGAR moth, but I can't make the rest of it work. Perhaps the compiler thought the moth was a eggEr?

I too think that the clue is faulty. Round is beat, which leaves EGGER for moth, but as Chris says it's EGGAR

OK, it seems that egger is an accepted variant so all's well

I think it was a mistake at some stage. If you Google Oak Egger, the first three pages only show Oak Eggar. (I didn't bother going any further!)

Jono, thanks for the Rotgut/gutrot - I think I was going backwards and forwards too much, too often, and losing track!

8d. I think this is just cryptic. "Abide With Me" is traditionally sung before the FA Cup Final. It is most often sung to the tune "Eventide" by the English organist William Henry Monk.

I should have looked up the lyrics…

“Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.”
