Fine, that decides it! I enjoyed this more than previous Maskarades, which sometimes seemed a bit laboured. Plus they often included mistakes!

Did’t enjoy this one much. FOI was 1dn which helped get the theme words. LOI was 43dn (with help from Google). Couldn’t parse everything. COD 41ac

Hi BigJack,

The only one I didn't know without having to Google was the "editor" - I'm still not sure what he is the editor of but I think it might be The Spectator.

Thanks FemmeNoire,

15a - Yes, it is a foreign word.

35a - Is a Japanese electronics manufacturer of, among other things, "keyboard" which goes around a theme word - definition is "British sprinter" (he specialised as a 400m relay runner)

51a - Anagram/"demolished" of "oak tree n(ot) + theme word - definition is "great stone faced film star".

49d - Is hidden in the clue - definition is "money"

There is no 23a - did you mean 23d? 6 letter "promotes" (as in 'lifts up') + 4 letter "second man" (from the Bible) - definition is "causes trouble"

Spectator is probably right Brendan, especially as Maskarade also sets crosswords there under the name Doc.
The cricket score is a reference to the admiral, as it’s said he had one each of three things (though probably it’s not true)

Thanks Jono,

I remember the cricket umpire David Shepherd was superstitious and used to stand on one leg when the score reached 111
