Apologies if someone else has raised this already - it’s a long thread. I can’t see 30ac? I suspect I have 5d wrong so a nudge would be welcome. Please take pity on me. All the Welsh teams took a hiding this weekend
Thanks

Hi William,
30a Think ‘bridge’ for the opposing players and a two letter abbreviation for secretary. There’s a theme word in the middle. It’s a dance (plural)

5d, Chambers gives CARRY UP= "to trace back."

Thanks Jono

See 30a now. Does 5d begin with c and end in p? If so I don’t think it’s a good definition . Also I’d always thought that 35a was a hurdler rather than a sprinter
However, an enjoyable puzzle when this week’s Listener was beyond me.

My appreciation to all who contribute to this thread

Ah, interesting, I see that now Buddy, but what does it mean, what would be an example in usage?

When in doubt consult the OED:

carry up: To trace back in time.
1676 M. Hale Primitive Originat. Mankind (1677) ii. ii He carries up the Egyptian Dynasties before the Flood.
1863 A. P. Stanley Lect. Jewish Church I. iv. 75 The feud..is carried up by them to the feud between Joseph and his brethren.

I guess if they can't find any usage after 1863, it is pretty obscure!

Finished!
LOI was 28d and COD is 40d.
Thanks for all the hints above, I'd never have finished it without all that!
Enjoy the bank holiday :-)
