Sorry, I didn't enjoy it, though Paul is one of my least favoruite compilers. Yes, it's very clever, but all those "capital" repititions I found irritating.

Not quite finished - stuck on the crossing 6d/10a. Also don't understand the parsing of either spelling for 1d.

The wordplay for 16d is just wrong - viz. bears...

got 10a, which leaves only one likely solution for 6d, but again i can't see a parsing

Doh! Seen 6d now.

Is 1d A or O? I don't understand either.

Hi Chris,

1d - a homophone of a 5 letter word meaning "break" reversed/"up" which gives a word meaning "exchange".

6d - "capital" hidden in the clue.

10a - 6 letter word for "flew" minus its first letter/"not originally" - definition is "as some boats".

Hi ChrisE. I normally agree with your sentiments, particularly with regard to Paul's style of setting, but I disagree this week. I really enjoyed this once I'd worked out what was going on.

Not sure what problem you see with the wordplay for 16d - it looks fine to me.

Hi simond9x
Theodore Roosevelt was known as "Teddy", not "Ted". After he shot a bear, teddy bears became popular children's toys.

This is the sort of crossword I enjoy the least. Without 14a the rest of it is locked out.
As soon as I see self-referential clues I almost always just give up withough trying.
And I'm afraid 14a defeats me, even with that extra letter from 5d. There's no anagram I can find to fit.
Oh well - off to some masked Saturday shopping!

Hi Smot,

Maybe give 14a one more try - You're looking for a 7 letter anagram from the 6 letter "capital of Lebanon" + a single letter from "capital of Lebanon" - definition is "returned to former glory".
