Demure, show of gravity, being modest etc. Demur, object, say no+E, base, often used in crosswords.

Completed with thanks to this Forum. A lovely puzzle with an excellent end game. The joy of a good Listener puzzle is that I always feel that 'this one' is going to be too difficult then I look the posts here.

Another cracker of a puzzle, well done indeed to setters eXternal and serpent.

One loose end for me. I can't find the extra word that leads to the final across answer. If someone could let me have the clue in which it hides that would be great.
