Thanks to all for the appreciative nods. I thought this was tough but I'm not surprised others galloped through it.

As usual there is 1 cell entry that I can't resolve. I have started the Social misfit.. answer with an "n" then changed it to an "h" then back to "n" etc but I can't see the wordplay. Help please.

OK. Earlier post suggests "n" is right.

Hi tatters. Firstly, thanks as ever for posting this.

Re the clue you ask about, the N is correct. Think of sides of the road.

That’s OK in this country, anyway!

I’m a bit confused with the preamble. What does it mean by (U), and does the shape created mean something. I assume the SE riddle should end in S. Having never seen or read the NW riddle I had to google it. 16 cells I think, with 39/40 in total.
All in all, this was a very enjoyable puzzle, so thanks to Xanthippe. About 90 minutes to fill the grid, followed by about 4 hours of torture.

xij - I think the U is just text-speak - 'you' (the solver).
Not quite sure what you're getting at after that - the SE riddle doesn't end in 's', but the number count looks good for the other.

"Endless" is sufficient to define ETERNAL and "seemingly" is required in the riddle as its answer only seems never to arrive (in the sense that there's always another one to replace it) when in reality of course it does.

I don't think so, crosswhit99 - Chambers specifically gives 'seemingly endless' in the entry for 'eternal' (and the other thing definitely doesn't need it).

If neither requires it I guess it could be either in that case ;-)

It will be a strange day when half of a Chambers dictionary definition is deemed 'extra', crosswhit... but there's a first time for everything.
