Simond9x - if you look the book up on Wikipedia you'll see the relevance of the title - part of a quote(ish). Hope that is helpful enough, don't want another slating from the resident sage.

For 35D, think of the common 5 letter word meaning to fall from faith. Take off a letter ( one of the extra ones ) and you are left with the grid entry which is part of a church.

As for the lies in the title , there is an infamous phrase on page 163 of the novel which will explain all ... not for delicate eyes or ears !

Whilst I am here, can I wish all Listenerites a Happy and Brexit-free Christmas. Thanks for all the entertainment and help in 2018.

Thanks guys. I can't believe I struggled with 35 - it looks so obvious now. I'd taken 'mild lie' to mean [t]ALE so couldn't see how SAY was the definition. Doh!

All done, what an enjoyable puzzle. Also really good to see the forum back to its collaborative, supportive norm.

I have the book and the author.
I have a conflict at the cross section of 25d and 31a.

First N of Gunnage conflicts with D of ...Lidae.

Help please.

Sunray, there's a similar word for 31 A that doesn't end 'dea'.

Dang. The weasel family and the subfamily are one letter apart.

Thanks malone.

I finished this one late last night, in record time for me. The theme was completely unknown to me. I was fascinated to read all about it via google and wiki.

Are we really supposed to cut bits out and remove them before highlighting, folding and submitting?! I feel a bit nervous about it. If ever there’s a grid where the endgame instructs submission of a blank grid (guessing it's already been done) I’ll be having kittens.
