Thanks for help on those 3 clues -can go back to normal life now. Didn't like this one- too convoluted and frustrating not to be able to get going on the grid.
Hoping next week is a bit easier. We relative newcomers need some slightly easier ones to help us improve , even if they do irritate the experts
Thanks again-this site is great

Cheers. I had that as a real word but I could not find aine and my delaine definition did not fit. I am all done apart from the 5th letter of 8d and I don't understand how THorN fits with the clash. Then again, I can't parse 13. But for 9 it is definitely a T and not a TH or N. confused as ever.

13 sounds like row (series on the radio) Greek letter
9 second letter is T
So that is the location of the clash
If you look up THORN in Chambers and read ALL the entries, it should tell you about another ancient letter. This is to be used in the quoted line and in the clash cell.

8 Down Def = encrusting with filth. (Y) is extracted
wordplay = D (diamond) included in CRUD(E) + ING (ING is Yorkshire word for meadow)

Sorry. I see the thorn thing but I still can't get this radio series. Does row rhyme with blow or brow? I assume blow as low rhyming with brow is surely not right? I bet it's neither.

Rho if said out loud sounds like row (series).

Radio is an indicator that it is being said out loud- on the radio

Just about to submit this one and it has occurred to me that I do not really understand the title. I see how it could relate to the down clue modifications but that does not seem clever enough for such a complex puzzle.
Is there anything else about the title, apart from groups of 1, 2 or 3 letters, that is significant?

Google Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and read the part about the "exchange of winnings" in one of the synopses (in modern English!).
