Very hard - don't know how to enter Acrosses, or how to read the Downs! However, as well as a few Across answers, I've got one of the 3 specials, 39Ac. It hasn't given me much lead to the title.

There seems to be a slight ambiguity in the second sentence of the rubric. Does it mean the initial letters of each answer relate..., or that the answers themselves relate, before being amended?

Hi Dryden

Some across answers are entered normally, others in another manner.

Down clues need one or more letters removed to make sense. Doing this leaves real words in the clue.

For example 34d sort becomes so.

Hope that helps

Struggling to see how those removed letters lead to that line from a poem. A nudge might do it!

I forgot to say that the 2 different methods of entry for across clues initial letters of the answers are relevant.

Yes - most apposite - and all very logical in the end.

I'm struggling massively with this one, but I have a sneaking suspicion that 39AC makes up the 3rd of a group of three from an old English story/fable. If you look that up the significance of the title becomes more obvious.

I have 36 letters for the quote. I thought I had resolved the clash slightly unconvincingly using the answer to 42. I can't make this work for the quote, so have I chosen the wrong answer?
