Finally over the line albeit while unable to fully parse one clue (38AC - can't justify the 'O' as a party member).

Frankly I thought this was a stinker, with some very dubious clueing in a couple of instances. Dylan don't know if you're still struggling but my earlier post was correct so your 39AC may yet come in handy, especially if you google it along with the 3rd word of the title interpreted appropriately - think of the end of a letter say). If you need a stronger hint feel free to reply with your mail address and I'll send you a nudge. Other exchanges incidentally are 4 and 10DN if that helps.

I took Nat to be nationalist party member (though I may well be wrong)

The governing party member is the IN (in, noun, 1 in Chambers). The O is part of the lecture.

All sorted but missing the clash.

I have a complete grid but absolutely no idea what this is about. I have 35 letters that look like early English but hours of googling have got me nowhere.
I don't have a clash, but I haven't managed to parse 4d. Perhaps it's there, but I assumed it was a thematic entry to go with two others.

A third of the clues involve deletion of one or more letters from a word. That seems excessive, and is one of the things that make solving the clues so tough.
