Really struggling with this. Only one clue solved, but not entered because we obvs have to do something with the answer before entry.

Please don't tell me what that is, but help with another clue would be appreciated, to hopefully get me going.

24a Nationhoods disintegrating. Norway angrily expelled Americans.

Thanks.

cloverjo - unfortunately you've not chosen a good clue if you don't want the theme given away! Half the answers are clued normally but that's not one of them.
The clue shown as 30 Down should be 32 Down and that's a good one to get you started. A nice puzzle.

Hi cloverjo

I think the best way in to the puzzle is 1a and 1d.

They're both normal clues whose answers need adjusting.

They share a few letters at the beginning which may help the penny drop.

I agree with Bob a very clever puzzle.

I'm with cloverjo on this - I'm really struggling. I've solved only 4 clues (including 32dn) and only 1 of those is the same length as the grid entry. Stuck on 1ac and 1dn. Any hints would be most welcome!

1a Cluedo

1d should them become more obvious. An old fashioned word for America

I've been looking at this on and off since Sunday afternoon and I've solved three clues (maybe a fourth) with no idea of how to enter them.

Is 1d COLUMBIA?

3a is ALOHA SHIRTS.

A lot of the clues talk about leaving, sacking, expelled, abandoned, quits etc. Is that significant or is it the limited imagination of the clue setter?

Anything to do with the recent exam results?

No

1d is colonies
1a is colonel

The first 5 letters of each are a big help.

In other 'normal' clues there are similar words included. 3d has a relevant word in its midst.

Nothing to do with exams.
