Thank you for that Ginge. Despite your helpful hint I am still not seeing 5 down. At the moment I have symbol?in? but cannot even begin to see what the definition is in the clue. ( Despising new addition?) The symbol I have can be the modern usage as on a keypad or mean number and i have tried the various abbreviations of that to no avail. Back now to the drawing-board for a while.

Hi again alwayspuzzled,
The definition is new addition, the wordplay is abbreviations for Conservative & House of Lords in despising (9) condensed to (5).

Because the symbol means a different thing for 5D, it took me a long time too.
I have seen pound or number denoting the symbol in 3a. But not the word applied to 5d.

The standard 6 letter synonym for despising starting with H. Add the 3 letters mentioned by ginge.

Think of a bird, though the answer applies to other species too.

I am still working on 18a and 19d etc.

Sunray - for 19d look for 1st letters ('starts to'...) and include every bit of the clue.
I got the hang of how this clever puzzle works yesterday but after completing about half of it I'm now stuck and about to finally admit defeat, I think...

sunray, the below link (hopefully) should explain the term of the symbol in 5d.
18a; again uses an alternative term for the more common term of the symbol used in the clue.

Hi again sunray, the link doesn't "work" as I imagine its too long to copy and paste but if you simply Google ("symbol from 3a" or "symbol from 5d") and look at the Guardian entry.

Thanks ginge and gazzar.
I copied and pasted the link and it worked. Showing me how symbol in 3a can be called symbol in 5d.

19d, I saw the first 4 letters but cannot see the last two. Or I can see the last but not second last.
I thought every clue with the answer that does not require a symbol to be entered in the grid (such as 3a or 5d) also had to have a symbol in the word play.
Such as 24a.
But parsing does not always tell me how. I have 4 letters for 30a which is to do with police in another country. Same thing with 28a. I have pictures as in art in a gallery. But have not parsed it yet.

Is there a place where all the possible Marks are listed?
For example , a "." can be dot, period, stop, point etc.
A # can be H??? and H????.

Will look at 18a soon.

Hi again sunray, you are correct in what you say. Answers that do not contain a symbol use the symbol given in the clue as part of the wordplay. Look again at 19d and you will see [... (= etc)] between the words providing the 4th and last letter.

Thanks once again Ginge for your clear guidance. I was trying to make the symbol fit an answer instead of focusing on the clue itself.

sunray ...parse for 28a ... it has a solidus (forward slash) in the clue ....lose the D(democrat) and US(America) and you have your answer anagrammed (injured)
