Kirky, anagram tidal sea, but without aid, and you can make STEAL. One definition is Spenserian, shank.

Am still very new to all this, so a little help please...
Think I'm all finished but just can't understand the wordplay of 34a and 20d. Specifically the numbers "100,000" and "seven or 70" in the clues can anyone point me to a resource?

Hi, n00b! 100,000 in India is known as a "lakh", which has the alternative spelling (relevant for 34a) "lac". I thought that this was a rather weak clue, because the answer is more like an alternative spelling of the definition (this is "may" with the first letter corrected) than a different word.

Seven or 70 refers to the letter "S", which is a medieval latin numeral. There's a useful list of these on Wikipedia in the article "Roman numerals".

Thanks wintonian, hadn't come across Medieval Latin numbers before (or lakh). It does seem a very odd way to clue LAI? it but that is setter's prerogative.

Appreciate your help.

This may have been referred to earlier in the thread, but I can't see the second unclued answer. Is it a continuation of the first (i.e. There were two versions of t******n) if so, is there an alternative spelling of 7 down? If I understand the clue the word has an i as the second letter rather than an e. Any help over the line would be greatly appreciated as this is my last unknown.
