Gitto,

I was about to ask for an explanation of 32D as well.

40A is TRE(T)S (tres = 3 is a Mexican cardinal)

Hilfiger's elevated is L (slang for elevated, which is a US term for an elevated railroad). ANE is an obsolete word for one, hence ANES. The V is surplus, and the anagram is "aisles"

Don't like to ask however, is vessel the obvious but not in NW quadrant or am I looking for synonym? Do the changes to the normal answer affect any of the modified answers?

essira, you are looking for the vessel, not a synonym, and not in the NW quadrant. One of the answers it affects was previously modified

A beautiful puzzle, some very hard clues, and an easy finish. Am I right in assuming that the title of the puzzle would have read "Edwardian Openers", referring to the message and the treatment? Just a thought.

…or not hours. Lesson learned - always look up words you are certain cannot exist!!

Hi mearsault - re message 13, is not the title of the work is two words, not one? And (unimportantly and i'm probably wrong as my O-level was a long time ago) - "On peut le fair ainsi" - should it not be "faire"?

Hi Orson, Yes, both are unimportant.
And, also unimportantly, shouldn't that be Meursault ? :)
