25d ...possibly... S + village synonym without the H ( defn young swimmer) .... heartbroken could be the significant meaning to change the 4 middle letters round??

Thanks xwordfan.
I had the answer to 25d but was looking only at the middle two letters. You have to break all 4 in the middle.

25 a I have papergirl. I cannot parse it.
I have not solved 21d so I do not know if L is correct at the end of 25a.

I also looked up the word scout in Chambers but nothing clicks. 35a has Retire D which would imply the answer is 8 letters long and then get rid of D. But the answer is only 7 letters long. I now have ENAM?I?. Or it could be ENAL?I?.

I am also not sure of what to do in 24a.

Sunray, the sig word in 35a across is 'retired', but it's not Retire D. Have another look at 'scout' in Chambers. Your letters in your second example for that clue are correct.

Yes I have papergirl too
For 21d the defn is an excellent specimen"(also a snake) ...it's an anagram ... then "i think" you write the letters in alphabetical order to go in the grid..

I agree about 35a but am only as far as you on it.

Can you help with 18d and 8d please?
