Try studying the banner for the newspaper alluded to in 1d - there's an example in Wikipedia - the penny should then drop.

Thanks PB saw this late last night after looking at the Wiki page...so why have us black out the letters after the rotation?Maybe JH tried to slot in an RIP somewhere but didn't manage if ?

Even though I was less than gracious about this puzzle earlier, I have plodded on!
The last step still eludes me.
Would any of you be willing to give me a further nudge?

You just have to change the orientation of THE INDEPENDENT to mimic the paper's front-cover banner.....and then darken it !

Hi Trebor1. Column 3 - the a is wrong - that goes in a different column - it is blank in column 3. The first word at 3 is the plural of a word listed in my crossword dictionary as a Turkish governor. It is the anagram of a tool.
