Hi there StaceyD. I have all but given up on this, but if it helps to start you off, 1a is an anagram - think scythe. Then the previous help with 1d might lead you on. However, the obscurity of some words leaves me wishing I knew more. It was ever thus.

I can't get started at all on this. Muraria, how do you parse 1d please?

Hi Stacey (and others) when I first saw today's puzzle I thought that a very difficult one was unfair on potential newbies but I've changed my mind. When you see the solution and the blog on Fifteensquared you'll be amazed. Also they do get easier - honest!

Also, 1d works like this: split clue after "can".
First word is 3 letters and second one is 10 letters.

Have to say that, despite solving 1a and column 1, I am still completely stumped! Keep looking & praying for a break through but nothing seems to be jumping out at me! Roll on next week so I can see the answers!

What a stinker this week - so disappointed that the last one in the indy has left me baffled. Is 17 anything to do with the world of catering- Ive partly parsed a possible answer but fear I may have stretched the obscurity of these clues one step too far.

It's a bit of a misfire for the first week in the i, isn't it. Can't see any new fans being converted by this.

I've made slow but steady progress and now have the grid complete with 59 empty cells. However I'm now struggling to see the14 cells to darken. Any hints gratefully received.

17A is a Latin phrase for " my fault".
