I don't have 14 myself yet. 24 is a hidden word that, obviously, starts with "M". It's not in Chambers but it's in ODE: www . oxforddictionaries . com

It's also worth considering getting Chambers and ODE from Wordweb: wordweb . com as they will help tremendously with this sort of puzzle.

Please note that I do not intend the above link to be viewed as advertising as I have no affiliation with Wordweb.

Finished at last! What a scorcher! Thanks for all the help on here.

14a is a man's name with a 3 letter word for suffering inside a three letter extremity, all reversed.

By the way, Where do we find the online version? I have looked on independent.co.uk and can't find any links.

Well done Tomsdad,

Yes, this was a stinker and I stick by my earlier comment that this verges on unfair although I do admire the clever clueing and grid construction. It certainly kept me out of mischief over Easter !

Wonder how long it took JH to put it al together? I can only assume he either pre-empted the IQ going across to the I, or he had insider information !

Hi Tomsdad

No sorry, I recall seeing from time to time links online to facsimiles of The Indy, and the IQ but not seen these much at all lately. I know you can't access the IQ via The Indy's own website.

Still puzzling over the darkened letters. If they are THE INDEPENDENT surely the are two possibilities for the first E. Either the third letter of 1ac or the second letter of 2 dn. Also why not just re-rotate the six letters - why only five? I must be missing something. What is an "adjacent" cell?

My five further rotations are different to the original six.
